According to Anna Stefanopoulou, mechanical engineering professor at the University of Michigan Energy Institute:

“Batteries are weak when they are cold. They are like humans. At cold temperatures, it is important to have plenty of energy left so you can start. Don’t think that being near an outlet to charge will get you out of trouble. Our recent work shows that at low temperatures, you cannot charge, and it will be faster to discharge to warm up a bit the battery so your battery can safely accept the charging. So again, you need to leave plenty of charge to be able to start and go!”

“Sap can damage your car because of how it bonds with the vehicle's surface. Tree sap drops shrink over time, and as they shrink, they create stress on your car's finish because of that strong bond with the paint. That tension can end up cracking a car's finish.”

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), an organization that detects insurance fraud and vehicle theft, there were 1,020,729 car thefts in 2023, representing a 1% increase from the 1,008,756 thefts reported in 2022.

Specialized Car Cover Reduces Extreme Heat in Vehicles

Researchers from the University of Baghdad investigated the effects of using a special car cover on reducing the interior temperatures of a parked vehicle. The experiment was conducted in Amarah, a city in southern Iraq, under extreme summer conditions

The case study aimed to reduce the heat buildup inside the car's cabin, which can often reach dangerous levels. The experiments used a special polyethylene foam car cover with an aluminum foil top layer

The cover was designed to shield the windows and windshields of a parked car from direct sunlight, and various ventilation and window opening configurations were explored to identify the optimal cooling method.

The tests were performed during peak summer temperatures when ambient conditions often exceeded 50°C. Seven different scenarios, including options with and without the car cover and with different window-opening configurations, were analyzed to assess the temperature variations inside the car cabin.

In the unshaded case, the car cabin air temperature reached 74.8°C, while the dashboard temperature soared to 93°C. The optimal solution, where the cover was applied to all windows and the windows were slightly opened by 15 mm, resulted in a significant decrease in the cabin temperature to 53.3°C, which was 20.8% lower than the unshaded scenario. 

The experiment also demonstrated a reduction of 32.3% in the cooling load required to maintain comfortable cabin conditions.

This case study successfully demonstrated how the use of a specialized car cover, coupled with minor window ventilation, can effectively reduce both the temperature inside a vehicle and the cooling load demand under extreme weather conditions. 

Families may find such car covers beneficial in mitigating the heat inside the vehicle and also in enhancing safety when parked in high-temperature environments.

Smart IoT Car Cover Protects Vehicles for Busy Families

Kirti Masown and Rajesh Mehra, researchers from the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, India, developed an innovative IoT-based car cover system that provides complete protection for parked vehicles from environmental threats like rain, hail, and direct sunlight.
